It is Monday morning around 5:06 AM. My wifes alarm clock is buzzing away as I type this. I have to tell you about my Sunday out in Lynn Woods. I met up with two fellow practitioners at 8:00 AM and went over some material that one of them is looking at. Towards the end we got to see a fox come by. What a great sign to begin the training year for most and the first day I got to return to training. We made our way to the designated meeting spot and met up with the others for a nine o’clock start.
It is the first time I have been out on the new year where it was quite warm and no snow ice or rain in the woods in January. As we made our way up the trail to the first stop to do some light stretching exercise. I used that time to catch up with friends and wish them a happy new year.
We proceded out to our next stop which was a small clearing in which Mr. Ken Savage of Winchendon Martial Arts began demonstrating the knife attacks and defenses the group would use throughout the day. There is something very different when someone is thrusting and slshing at you while you are in the woods. The ground is uneven there were plenty of rocks in the ground and loose in this particular location. It was lightly wooded so you did have to contend with trees. That also made for a slippery footing with all the leaves on the ground. This forced you to maintain an awareness as well as a low body posture and agile feet.
We then moved on to our next location which involved our environment challenge. A small rock climb maybe 12-15 feet but enough to make you think how you would engage the surface. For the challenge you needed to jump a small gorge intimidating enough in that it is probably 20 feet to the bottom and about 4 to 7 feet to the other side depending how you measured. It is enough to make you think about all the things that could go wrong if you dwelled there long enough.
From there we moved to our final training location by stone tower. Here we worked on the last of our knife defenses. It appeared everyone had the basic under control. Now it was time to field test it.
Ken collected us as the trainers and set us out to take positions down the path. some hidden some not. Here we would test the group by picking one person and engaging them with an attack. There job was evade the attack and either control the blade or escape a second attack. Everyone did well for the first time adventuring in the woods and levaing the safe, flat, open, padded and well lit comfort of the dojo.
This is the type of training I admire most in the system that we study. Learning how to adapt to your environment all the while a person or persons are attempting to cause you harm.
From here we set out to the parking lot and had our wonderful tea that Mr. Savage makes every year. A bit of chatter and a picture. Then as is customary some of us head off to local restaurant and have lunch and talk about all the things that are going on in our lives.
A BIG thanks to Mr. Savage for Leading us into the New Year in an inspiring workout! If you ever find yourself in and or around the Winchendon area. The Winchendon Martial Arts is a great place to train With Ken Savage.
The aftermath to ths workout is I am a bit sore considering I have been on my back for almost a month. However the soreness is in the places it should be. I was in bed by 8:00 PM after a wonderful meal with my wife and daughter at one of our favorite mexican restaurants.
Now I am up planning my day. With that said it is time for me to jet off into the day and wish all of you an amazing day.
Take care webbers this is Tim Thomas from Aion signing off and remember to live the life you desire!
